Yassas! Greco greek food goes kosher

Ever since Greco opened up their huge place on the Tel Aviv boardwalk, we’ve walked by probably hundreds of times. It’s almost always packed and there’s always lively, Greek music playing (even if they play that same Greek song over and over). But of course Greek cuisine is loaded with seafood, and while the food looks delicious, us kosher-eating folks are left out.

That is until Greco opened a kosher branch! So we took the trip to Ramat Aviv to check it out.

Unlike the Greco on the Tel Aviv boardwalk, it’s in a quiet, residential area, but the design and vibes are similar.

We started off with the Greek bread. The idea is that you would eat this with the Mezze section of the menu so we ate it with the cold eggplant salad. But even alone, the bread was delicious – perfectly toasted on the outside and soft on the inside.

And this is the eggplant salad we had with it, also delicious.

Another starter we got was the Roasted King Oyster Mushroom – Mushrooms, aged kefalotyri cheese, walnuts, and almonds, on a bed of creamy polenta. We loved this dish. Mushrooms and polenta go together extremely well.

Next, we were intrigued by the black volcanic pasta so we had to give it a try. It’s more of a dark green than black, and it smelled and tasted somewhat fishy…but in a good, fresh way. We ended up enjoying this dish immensely though. The pasta was cooked perfectly and it was seasoned well with salt. It didn’t take us long to polish off the plate.

For our final dish, we went with the fish gyros. We thought it would be more of a wrap, but it turns out its served like a pizza. The gyros definitely weren’t mindblowing but they weren’t bad either. The dough was a bit on the thick side for our liking, but overall it was a good dish.

At the end of the meal, we were in the mood for a dessert, but something light. So we chose Greek ice cream. It was definitely light, and was covered with a berry sauce, and toasted almonds.

Finally, a note on the service. It was probably one of the best experiences we’ve had at a restaurant in Israel in terms of service. They checked on us a number of times. They took their time explaining the menu. They saw that we needed more water and refilled it right away. Kudos to Greco Kosher!
