Ewa Safi: Authentic, well priced Moroccan cuisine

A review of Ewa Safi restaurant, featuring authentic Moroccan cuisine at reasonable prices

We can't believe it took us so long to finally try Ewa Safi but we finally made it. Located just on the outskirts of the lovely Neve Tzedek neighborhood of Tel Aviv, the restaurant resides in a building reminiscent of the early days of Tel Aviv.

Ewa Safi in Neve Tzedek

Ewa Safi literally translates to "Stop, enough", which is what we had to tell ourselves by the end of the meal so we wouldn't explode.

For starters we got two frena loaves and five or six small salad dips as well as the lamb pastille. The bread and salads weren't anything special, but the pastille was. The pastille on its own is fairly straightforward: spiced, minced lamb, baked in philo pastry. But alongside it was carmelized pumpkin which, when eaten together with the meat, made this dish stand out.

For our main course we got two tajine dishes: lamb and veal cheek, each served with handmade couscous (so I was told) and vegetables. Both were delicious.

And since it was after Chanukah, we just couldn't resists ordering the sfinj for dessert. They were clearly fried on the spot, but I found they tasted more like sufganiyot than the sfinj I've had (though I'm definitely not an expert). Either way, they were light, fluffy, and delicious.
