Lorenz & Mintz: Extravagant French/Israeli Breakfast

A review of the historic kosher Tel Aviv breakfast spot Lorenz & Mintz

Lorentz & Mintz has long been the go-to kosher Tel Aviv breakfast place (In 1886 it existed in some form in the same location as Cafe Lorenz). But somehow, even after years of living here, we only recently went for the first time - so expectations were high.

We went on a whim on a Friday morning, which meant there was a group of people waiting to be seated. (They don't take reservations on Fridays) We were told it would be about an hour wait, but it ended up being only about 45 minutes. Not too bad, but something to keep in mind.

Once we got seated, we were given some bread (brioche, olive, and whole grain), some tehina and eggplant dip, and bulgarian cheese in a red pepper sauce - easily one of the best complimentary appetizers we've had.

At first we were a bit surprised at the seemingly high prices for breakfast food (55-75 shekel). But when you factor in the appetizers, a drink, and a side salad that come with the dishes, as well as the generous portions, it ends up being good value-for-money in Tel Aviv. (

When we asked the waitress what she recommends, she immediately said "croque madam". So that's what one of us got - and we were not disappointed.

Two pieces of airy, crispy brioche bread with a truffle and mushroom cream sauce in between. On top, a melty layer of gouda and parmesan, topped with runny eggs.

It's one of those breakfasts you can only take a few bites of because it's so rich, but that you can't stop eating because of the perfect blend of foods. The truffle made this dish but it wasn't overpowering like it sometimes is.

The green shakshuka was good but nothing earth-shattering.

All in all, we enjoyed Lorenz and Mintz. The service was good despite how busy it was, and we walked away feeling like we ate things we couldn't really find elsewhere.

Highly recommend for a special breakfast
